A Heritage That Tells the Story of the Médoc

The region’s heritage offers a fascinating insight into the rich history of the Médoc!

From early on, the Médoc welcomed pilgrims traveling to Santiago de Compostela, which is why the Basilica of Notre-Dame-de-la-Fin-des-Terres was later recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site. To protect one of the river entrances to Bordeaux, Fort Médoc was built, part of the “estuary locks” along with Blaye and Fort Pâté, also distinguished by UNESCO.

At the mouth of the Gironde estuary stands the Cordouan Lighthouse, classified as a historic monument in 1862. Today, it is the oldest active lighthouse in France, the only one with a lighthouse keeper, and open for visits.
